Motshekga goes back to school

Education

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has gone back to school - to teach.

For Motshekga it was about giving back to her community and also heeding Nelson Mandela’s call to donate 67 minutes of one’s time to make the world a better place.

Motshekga started her primary school education at Winnie Ngwekazi Primary school in Pimville Zone 1, Soweto, and on Monday she returned to teach a Grade 3 class.

The minister, who qualified and worked as a teacher, fell right back into the role when she stood in front of the class and read from a story book.

At first, the pupils were shy and did not participate fully, but Motshekga got them involved by asking them to read aloud.

The minister was patient, even when her pupils were incoherent and unable to find the correct page in their books.

Menzi Tshabalala stood out. Although shy at first, he took up his book and confidently read The Three Little Pigs to the class.

After the reading exercise was finished, Motshekga gave her class another task - dictation. And again it was Menzi who shone by spelling each of the 10 words correctly.
