Armstrong in Cape Town
The world’s most famous cyclist has arrived in Cape Town, five days ahead of the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.
Lance Armstrong landed in the city last night and - after a brief delay thanks to an over-full passport and an “unfriendly” immigration official at Cape Town International Airport - was preparing this morning to embark on a busy week of public speaking engagements and meetings.
Armstrong, who has won the Tour de France seven times, is taking part in the Cycle Tour for the first time this year.
He kept a low profile early today after posting on social networking service Twitter about his arrival at the airport last night. He is staying at a luxury guesthouse in Bantry Bay.
Armstrong and other local sporting personalities were expected to visit the Spine Road Secondary School in Mitchells Plain at about lunchtime today to address children involved with a local NGO, the JAG Foundation, which gets children involved in sport.
He is also expected to visit Groote Schuur Hospital on Thursday to visit cancer patients. Armstrong is a cancer survivor whose remarkable recovery and return to fitness has inspired millions.
