Mark matric papers fairly, pleads Mchunu

Education

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for education, Senzo Mchunu, on Wednesday made a passionate plea to Durban matric examination markers to exercise fairness and excellence, as the pupils’ future depended on the results.

He was visiting marking centres at Durban High School in Berea, VN Naik School in Newlands East and AM Moola Special School in Phoenix. Marking centres on the South Coast and Vryheid have also been visited by officials.

“It’s going well so far. It’s important that markers are conscious of the fact that they aren’t just marking Grade 12 exams. They are marking scripts of individual pupils,” Mchunu warned.

He also urged pupils to behave in an orderly fashion after exams. He said failing Grade 12 was not the end of the world.

“If for any reason you don’t make it, start again and you will succeed. But the pupils that do succeed have to keep at it because Grade 12 isn’t the end of their academic journey,” Mchunu said.

A total of 140 089 full-time and 120 400 part-time candidates had registered for the exams. The department said the biggest problem in KZN related to computer exams, where disks used to save answers malfunctioned.

The province had set up 31 marking centres. Marking would end on December 19. The results would be released on January 7.
