The principals of Bishops and Paarl Gymnasium were due to meet on Monday to discuss an on-field brawl involving their under-16 rugby teams which resulted in a weekend match being abandoned.

The game, at Bishops on Saturday, was refereed by Paul Burton, a former Bishops head boy and now a city business person. Burton blew his whistle to end the match before full time - reportedly after repeated outbreaks of fighting between the two groups of players.

Education MEC Cameron Dugmore said on Monday morning: “I’m shocked at what seems to me to be an unprecedented development in school rugby.

“My colleague MEC (Whitey) Jacobs is leading a campaign arising out of the tragic death of Riaan Loots to rid the sport of violence and thuggery.”

Loots died after being injured in an ill-tempered match between his team, Rawsonville Rugby Club, and Delicious Rugby Club from Ceres, in June 2006.

“We have to be absolutely resolute to find out who was responsible for this tragic event and my department will launch an immediate investigation,” Dugmore said.

Sources said the incident was of particular embarrassment because of the schools’ status - Paarl Gym as a “Springbok factory”, where current Boks Jean de Villiers, Schalk Burger and around 25 former Boks matriculated, and Bishops, widely regarded as the city’s most prestigious private school.

One parent, Guy Kebble, whose son Oliver played for Bishops, said: “It’s barbaric to be kicking and punching and biting people.

“If boys at this age think they must cheat to win, then they’re going to continue doing this through their whole lives. That’s not what we want to produce.”

Oliver Kebble, the nephew of slain business person Brett Kebble, was reportedly bitten on the ear.

Paarl Gym principal Sebastian Reinhardt said on Monday morning that he had requested a meeting with Bishops head Grant Nupen.

He described the reported violence as “totally disgusting”.

Nupen said the meeting would take place on Monday.
