The KwaZulu-Natal government has set itself an ambitious target of 80 percent matric pass rate by 2014.
“While it will be expected that the matric pass rate should substantially increase in 2010, ideally KwaZulu-Natal must reach 80 percent by 2014,” said Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize.

The Gauteng Department of Education says the six-year-old who was allegedly punched by his Grade R teacher at a Joburg primary school was injured fighting with a classmate.
The department said an investigation into the incident had concluded that no teacher was involved in the punch-up.

Boys arrested for taking a gun to school

A 17-year-old Grade 11 boy and his two friends, aged 15 and 16, were arrested for possession of a firearm after they allegedly tried to attack a security guard at a Phoenix school.
The Westham Secondary school pupils were marked absent on Wednesday, but allegedly entered the property later to confront a security guard.
